In the vibrant city of Richmond, Vancouver, a captivating narrative unfolds along the enchanting No. 5 Road—a tale of religious harmony that illuminates the path to peaceful coexistence. Stretching for three kilometers, this remarkable road, affectionately known as the Highway to Heaven, stands as a beacon of inspiration. It is home to over 20 religious institutions, each of which represents a distinct tradition like Buddhism, Sikhism, Hinduism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. As I embarked on my exploration of this extraordinary community, I was captivated by the intertwining threads of faith, woven together with reverence, understanding, and a collective yearning for unity.

My journey begun with a visit to the Tibetan Thrangu Monastery—a sanctuary where tranquility and spiritual connection embraced all who entered its sacred doors. Stepping inside, I found myself enveloped in an aura of serenity, as devotees and visitors alike immersed themselves in the profound teachings of Buddhism.

The following day, my path led me to the illustrious Dharma Drum Vancouver Center, a sanctuary committed to the pursuit of Buddha’s wisdom through the Dharma Drum tradition of Chan Buddhism, established by the esteemed Chan Master Sheng Yen. With great honor, I engaged in fruitful conversations with the center’s director and abbeys, fostering a sense of collaboration and shared aspirations. There is a three-year course on Buddhism offered by the center. Witnessing students of Dharma Drum eagerly absorb the teachings of compassion, mindfulness, and inner peace within this nurturing environment was a sight that moved me profoundly.

Continuing along the Highway to Heaven, the tapestry of religious institutions unfolded before my eyes—a living testament to the vibrant tapestry of faith expression in Richmond. The Sikh gurdwara, a place of profound hospitality, welcomed all with open arms, extending the warmth of Langar—a communal meal—for anyone in need, regardless of their background or beliefs. Vibrant hues and melodious chants filled the air at the Hindu temple, beckoning devotees to find solace and strength within their shared devotion. The Jewish synagogue, standing tall as a beacon of tradition and wisdom, fostered a sense of community and belonging among its members. Churches and mosques stood side by side, representing the Christian and Muslim faiths, respectively, united in their pursuit of spirituality and compassion.

Yet, what struck me most profoundly in this extraordinary community was the mutual respect and acceptance that permeated the hearts of its inhabitants. In a world often fragmented by division and discord, the Highway to Heaven emerged as an oasis of harmonious coexistence. People from diverse ethnic and religious backgrounds shared the same spaces, finding common ground in their shared humanity. It served as a resounding testament to the power of understanding, empathy, and the unwavering willingness to learn from one another.

As I bid farewell to the Highway to Heaven, its significance resonated within me, reaching far beyond the boundaries of Richmond. It served as a shining example—a testament to the possibility of celebrating and nurturing religious diversity. Its remarkable story offered a blueprint for fostering religious harmony and understanding in other cities across Canada and beyond. By embracing the values of tolerance, acceptance, and respect, these cities have the potential to create their own versions of the Highway to Heaven—an interconnected tapestry where citizens from diverse faiths come together to build a future that is brighter, more inclusive, and fortified by unity.

Ultimately, the religious harmony within Richmond’s No 5 Road serves as a resounding reminder of the boundless potential for unity that lies within diversity. It stands as an enduring testament to the transformative power that emerges when individuals set aside their differences, embracing each other’s beliefs and cultures with open hearts and open minds. Within this radiant tapestry, compassion, understanding, and harmonious coexistence intertwine, enriching the lives of all fortunate enough to experience its embrace.
